Hilary Masetti is an urban illustrator who has developed her own unique style in urban landscape drawing. She was born in Leeds and now lives in Muswell Hill, North London, an area which proudly features in much of her work. Hilary has always enjoyed art, forever searching for the next subject to draw whether as a watercolour portrait from a photograph or a still life graphite sketch. Since living in London she has been drawn to urban sketching through her love of detail and the beauty of buildings in local areas such as Muswell Hill, Crouch End and Highgate. She is inspired by the variety of rich architecture found in all pockets of London. Hilary aims to use her intricately detailed drawings to capture the beauty of buildings which often play a great part in people’s everyday lives.

Hilary feels incredibly privileged to be doing what she loves on a day to day basis. She really enjoys the challenge of capturing architectural detail in her drawings and the satisfaction of the finished piece which can quite often turn out very differently from what was originally planned. She learns a great deal from all customer feedback and the ideas she receives from fellow artists which help her to grow and develop in her work.

The Process

Hilary uses photographic references from shots taken usually from a few different angles in good light. She firstly sketches the basic outline in pencil where measuring, composition, perspective and scale all come into play. These lines are then followed and detail is added with black ink. The final stage is adding the colour to complement the composition of the sketch. The type of surface a building has such as stone, wood and brick can set the tone of a drawing and influence the colours and media used. Hilary uses colour to show the way light hits buildings, wonderfully highlighting their beautiful architectural features.

Media

Hilary’s urban drawings use both ink and watercolour/watercolour pencils or ink and brush pens and promarkers. She sells Giclee prints on premium photo rag paper of beautifully detailed sketches such as the Clock Tower in Crouch End, Muswell Hill Broadway and Greens of Highgate.

Commissions

Hilary welcomes commissions and has enjoyed drawing different style buildings including familiar Victorian houses in Muswell Hill, beautiful stone terraces in Bristol and Georgian business fronts in Highgate.
